rosengirl: (XF : Mulder/Scully shoot me now)

Well, to say that it didn't meet my expectations would be the understatement of the year.

The Good

- I liked Gillian and David's performances and they're definitely not to blame in my disappointment.

- I ADORED the references to the show's history at the beginning like Samantha's picture, the namechecks for Luther Lee Boggs and Clyde Bruckman and seeing M&S walking again through the FBI corridors.

- Scully's amplified cynicism was made of awesome.

- Their scene in bed was very understated and cute, it felt very natural.

- Billy Connolly was FANTASTIC as Father Joe and his scenes with Gillian were magnificent.

- UNEXPECTED SKINNER !!1 UNEXPECTED MULDER/SKINNER SLASH !!1 I will not believe one second that the Mulder/Skinner scene wasn't intended as a gift to the slashers from the writers/actors/director.

The Bad

Pretty much everything else starting with the excruciating secondary characters. Amanda Peet and X-hibitwhatsisname were plot devices, not characters. As far as my love for Callum Keith Rennie goes, his character was your typical stereotypical russian bad guy. Except that he was gay, which added a pointless unflattering portrayal of the community.

The case was decent (for a very average episode) and I was quite into it. I loved the idea of a pedophile psychic having visions via a connection to one of his former victims, but the ridiculous ending pretty much ruined it. And the quick resolution was EXTRA LAME. It was kinda creepy yes, but not scary at all.

But most of all what I HATED was how they used Mulder and Scully in the story. By making the choice of showing them at odds for 90% of the movie kept them from recreating what MADE the success of the show which is Mulder and Scully's PARTNERSHIP.
I'm as M/S shipper as you can get and I don't mind a little domesticity at times but to only show them from this angle ? WOULD OBVIOUSLY NOT WORK ! I get that Scully was tired of chasing monsters (since they told us oh, a hundred times) but I sure as hell can't believe that A : medicine could be her true vocation, it never was, even before she met Mulder.
B. she would try to stop Mulder from getting seriously involved in a case. Be annoyed ? Sure. Threatening to leave him even if she *knows* him and how much this means to him ? GTFO. That's totally OOC.
It would have been SO MUCH better and more believable to have her be reluctant to be part of the case until halfway through the movie and seing her being lured in by Mulder's passion and rediscovering the thrill of a good investigation.
Instead, they stuck her in a B plot with a sick boy and a religious hospital which was TEDIOUS AS FUCK, to try justifying why she wouldn't want to investigate with Mulder *FACEPALM*
I would have believed that the characters could have reached a breaking point if the movie had been set 15 years later, but after only 6 years, I just can't see the characters taking this direction from the way we left them in the finale episode. It just didn't work at all and it's too bad.
And I really had no interest in seeing them behaving like this.

As I said, I'm a M/S shipper and yet the scene by the car made me CRINGE SO HARD !! The kiss was very pretty but the dialogues were so cheesy it was embarrassing.

The Ugly

For the love of all that is holy, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WATCH THE SCENE AFTER THE CREDITS. I HAD TO BLEACH MY BRAIN AFTER THAT.

So if you really miss the show, rewatching it would definitely be the better option.

Fight the Future was a friggin' masterpiece in comparison.
