I saw it yesterday with
angeliksmall and
ephyse.
I'm going to see it again next week in Birmingham and my brother will be with us except that he has not read any books and only seen the first movie. So I told him that it would be better to catch up with HP4 and I pimped it like this :
me : "But you know, HP4 wins because there is David Tennant in it."
him : "RLY ?? Is he also in HP5 ?"
me : "No but his tongue is the most important plot point of HP4"
him : "Oh yeah I'm definitely watching this."
He is SUCH a fanboy XD
So ! HP5 was BRILLIANT ! It's definitely my favorite film of the five.
Despite al the missing scenes I felt like it was the best adaptation of a HP book so far. The atmosphere from book to screen translated perfectly and the darkness of the story was very well done.
Daniel Radcliffe was AMAZING. I'm thinking particulary about the scene where he yells 'look at me' at a startled Dumbledore and the one where he fights Voldemort's posession. He's really becoming a great actor.
He made us feel Harry's sadness, loneliness and helplessness and I empathized with him a lot. Harry's anger has been toned down a little compared to the book and it was nice because he never ever annoyed me here.
The new characters were wonderful as well. Especialy Luna Lovegood who couldn't have been better casted. She had the exact dreamy attitude that I was expecting and her scenes with Harry where awesome ! I'm so rooting for Harry/Luna right now.
Dolores Umbridge was chilling ! She made me laugh a lot but she was also magnificent at being creepy.
Bellatrix Lestrange. Helena Bonham Carter. How could that have failed ? Seriously ! She was perfect, too bad her screentime felt too short (but there are two wonderful Bella/Neville and Bella/Harry moments)
Lucius and Snape were awesomecakes, as short as we saw them.
Sirius was fantastic ! They made all these very touching moments between him and Harry to make his death all the more cruel for Harry and it worked like a charm. It was a horrifying moment (very well shot btw) even if it happened really quickly, but I *LOVED* Harry's reaction when white hot anger took over and he ran after Bella. Wow just writing this makes me want to see it again so badly !
The FX looked AMAZING. What I liked the most was their version of the Ministry of Magic at the beginning of the film. It was, well, magical ! The two scenes where they flew over London by night were also amazingly beautiful. And then the battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort was just. Wow. I NEED to see it again !
I have just one true regret : Snape's memory. I thing it was great that Harry saw it directly from Snape's head but what I thought didn't work is that we never really saw that Harry was shocked by his father's attitude toward Snape. Snape dismissed him and then it was a completely different scene. That was a real shame because it was my favorite part of the book.
But apart from this, the film summed up the book perfectly and everything from the actors to the FX was really satisfying.

on 2007-07-12 01:33 pm (UTC)Everyone seems to have loved Luna (and there's a lot of Harry/Luna love going around) and it couldn't make me happier. I've loved that girl since we first saw her (and would love her and Harry together), I'm so glad the movie does her justice.
And I'm so glad the general opinion was that the movie rocked, OotP is my favourite book, I would have been really disappointed if the movie didn't measure up.
awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
